American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) defines Bio-systems Engineering as a developing area of expertise within agricultural engineering, which applies engineering principles to the problems encountered in biological systems and natural environments.
In general, Bio-systems Engineering is a branch of engineering that includes the application of engineering sciences to biological systems and processes. In a broad sense, it can be said that the department, containing the topics of soil and water resources, agricultural structures, agricultural machinery and energy and food processing systems, connects biology, environmental and agricultural sciences and engineering sciences.
The department was established in 2011 and started education by admitting its first students in 2012. The department has been providing undergraduate and graduate education since 2012 and PhD education since 2013. The students who study for 4 years (8 semesters) in the undergraduate program and complete a 30-day internship with a total course load of 240 ECTS are entitled to receive a bachelor's degree and awarded the title of “Agricultural Engineer”.
The educational activities of the department continue in Safiye Çıkrıkçıoğlu Building of the Faculty of Agriculture located on central campus, whereas research activities are carried out in the Research Laboratory Building of the Faculty of Agriculture located on central campus.
There are 10 academic staff members at the department including 2 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 2 Assistant Professors, 1 Lecturer and 2 Research Assistants. A large number of studies are carried out in the fields of land and water resources, agricultural energy systems, agricultural machinery systems and agricultural structures by the academic staff members who have achieved national and international success in their field.
